In Paradise

Lucifer leaned against the tree in the sunlight, wings spread wide in the warmth. He was watching the birds in the sky above Eden. The blue of the sky alone he could stare at for days, just observing the subtle tone changes. Paradise was better than Heaven ever could be. Everything in Eden changed over time which added to the beauty that the static nature of Heaven could never possess.

Suddenly his eyes were covered, he panicked thinking that he was under attack from the seraphim on guard. He cried out pushing the obstruction aside. A wreath of flowers fell into his lap and he stared at it curiously. Angels would not make something like this; without use and dappled with all the colors of creation.

“Do not worry so. Michael is on the East Wall.” Eve said as she sat down in the grass beside the angel. Her hair was wound up with flowers and leaves, held in place with braids.

Lucifer laughed merrily as she put the wreath of flowers back on his head. “You never wear your crown here so I made you one.”

She was laughing now, laying herself out in the grass to look at the sky. “What is it like to fly?”

He looked down at her, “It is like the wind, free, without restraint.” How could he explain flight to someone who could not leave the ground?

“Can you show me?” She smiled innocently as Lucifer ran his fingers through her hair spread out in the grass.

“You have seen angels fly.” Lucifer commented absently.

“Will you take me with you?” Eve had sat up next to him, gaze expectant.

Lucifer felt insanity with those words. His mind was not on a flight but taking her away from the insidious nature of God, Adam, the angels, all of this. To do so would rob her of the beauty and serenity of Paradise. That he could not do despite the fleeting idea of stealing her away from those who both used and ignored her.

“If you can convince me to get up from here, beneath this tree.” He grinned playfully as she tugged on his arm. He tugged back and Eve fell on top of him in a sea of giggles. Lucifer brushed her hair aside to see the pink on her cheeks from laughter.

“You are too strong.” She rolled a little to prop her elbows up on his chest. “I am just a woman and you are an angel. I cannot move you.”

“Well...” Lucifer gazed at her admiringly. There was nothing like her anywhere. In all of creation she was the only one, special, and alone. “I would accept a kiss.”

“A kiss?” She looked confused. Not just the kind of confusion that comes from being asked something unexpected but the confusion from not knowing what a word meant at all.

“Adam has kissed you?” Lucifer asked with his brow hitched up curiously. God did tell them to be fruitful and multiply. The animals had done His bidding. Had Adam seriously wandered Eden with such a beautiful woman and did not follow suit?

She shook her head, no, finally. Lucifer didn't know what to do with this information. It was ridiculous, sacrilegious maybe. He must have looked startled because she had tilted here head. “What is wrong?” She asked.

“I cannot believe Adam would look upon you and not wish to kiss you.” Maybe there was Hell to pay for flirting with Eve but Lucifer already lived in Hell, what could happen at this point? More damnation than darkness and chained to a lake of fire? “I would kiss you everyday.”

Her confusion hadn't left but his tone caused her to giggle innocently. “Will show me what a kiss is?”

Now that was an invitation that Lucifer, in all his rebellious stubbornness, could not refuse. Very slowly he sat up, tucking her hair behind her ears. She was still smiling, almost laughing when he placed a very chaste kiss on her lips.

It took her a moment, cheeks flushed red, before she spoke. “Is that a kiss?”

Lucifer nodded without taking his eyes off hers. He could still feel her lips on his and it was like madness. This was the Hell there would be to pay, desire and lust. Eve must have sensed his feelings because she sucked in a ragged breath as she leaned close and returned the kiss.

“Kissing you brings me joy.” Eve whispered.

Lucifer could not stay here any longer or he would take Adam's wife, apparently before Adam had any inclination to do so. A moment passed of imagining Eve spread out on her back under him and he had to look away. “I believe I owe you a flight.”

He commented to distract himself from his reaction to those kisses, as innocent as they were. He stood abruptly, needing desperately to be away from her skin. “Unless you no longer wish to fly.”

Eve bounded up beside him in anticipation, taking his hand. Things were different in that moment as they both looked toward the sky. She held tighter to his hand and he felt electricity from her touch.

“Are you ready to fly?” Lucifer asked as he wrapped his arms around her waist. She nodded and with a single flap of wings they left the ground. God would strike him down for this behavior for sure, if God ever found out.
